In 2009, four-star U.S. Army General Glen McMahon is assigned to command military operations in Afghanistan. Known for his intense work ethic and unyielding belief in counter-insurgency tactics, McMahon arrives determined to bring order to a long-standing, chaotic conflict. However, he soon finds himself navigating a complex maze of political friction, weary soldiers, uncooperative international allies, and an administration in Washington eager to minimize its involvement.
Accompanied by a dedicated yet eccentric entourage of aides and advisers, McMahon launches an ambitious campaign to win over the local population while requesting thousands of additional combat troops. As he tours battlegrounds and diplomatic quarters, his disconnect from the harsh political reality becomes increasingly evident. The absurdity of managing a modern war efforts highlights the clash between military ambition and Washington’s policy demands.

When an exposé journalist embeds with McMahon’s team, the general’s unfiltered candidness and unorthodox leadership style are laid bare. The fallout exposes the absurdity of the military apparatus and the near-impossible nature of the mission. Ultimately, McMahon’s relentless drive leads to his public downfall, offering a sharp commentary on the hubris and bureaucratic dysfunction behind American foreign policy.
